1. Have the right kind of boxes...the right sizes and strength to make stacking safe and easy, special boxes for dishes, lamps, and hanging garments, files, medical records or office records and the like.
2. Identify each box, where it should go and it's contents in bold black or blue letters that are easily viable.
3. Pack containers tightly to avoid shifting.
4. Make a master list of all boxes and their contents organized by room, or make floor plan copies and highlight where they will go.
5. Mark sure the items you will need first are loaded in last when packing the truck. You will make easier access for kids toys, bedding, kitchen items, telephones, medicine etc.
6. Plan ahead what you will need the first day after your move. Packing a separate bag or box with toiletries, a change of clothes will save time and money for emergency purchases
7. Pack according to season. By marking the boxes with seasonal items, you won't have to pack them till next season.
8. Use packing items such as sealing tape, padding, bubble wrap, wrapping paper, and oversized plastic storage bags, to keep out insects, moisture, dust.
9. Pack your current phone book, you may need to call residents or business in your former home town.
10. Drain all power & yard tools so they won't leak.
11. Clean the refrigerator, leave the door ajar for a time to decrease humidity inside. Place a box of baking soda inside to prevent mildew and musty smells.
12. Important documents like birth & marriage certificates, medical records, school records, passports, pet records, credit card & banking records and tax returns in a safe place and not in a moving truck
13. Protect your flooring on moving day by taping old sheets or a vinyl runner to the ground to protect those surfaces.
14. Tie up electrical cords to prevent them from getting tangled.
15. Never wrap lamp shades in newspaper as the ink may soil the shades. Tissue paper or a pillowcase are fine.
16. Vinyl furniture covers for couches, chair, mattress sets, etc.
17. Disassemble furniture, remove table legs or turn upside down, store table on edge, place all furniture on pallets for air circulation, prevent moisture damage.
18. Hang clothes in garment boxes. Pack shoes, sweaters and other folded clothes in the bottom.
19. Load plants in the moving truck last and unload them first.
